If you’re at a crossroads in your life, uncertain of where to go or what to do next, you aren’t alone. At one point or another, we all feel that sinking sensation of not knowing which direction to take.
Last year around this time, I experienced this firsthand. My father passed away and I found myself in an overwhelming situation. As his only child, I was left to plan his funeral, clean out his house, and handle his final affairs. Although I intended to remain in California forever, my dad was based across the country and the back-and-forth travel became untenable. I quickly fell into a depression and felt completely in over my head.
So, I made the decision to move across the country to make things easier. And now, nearly a year later, things have settled down and I’m at another crossroads. Do I stay here in Louisiana, go back to California, or start fresh?
I’m opting to embrace this opportunity and build a new life for myself near Asheville, North Carolina. And you know what’s funny? By surrendering to uncertainty, each next step seems to magically present itself.
If this is resonating with you, you’re reading this for a reason. Let’s take this time to explore how you can embrace the uncertainty in your life and find your next step.
1.) Recognize You Won’t Always Have All the Answers and That’s Okay!
The first thing I’ll tell you (from personal experience) is that it’s absolutely okay not to have all the answers. Life isn’t an exam, and you’re not under a timer. Life is a journey, and we are all on the path to experience it to the fullest and find the right track for us.
Give yourself permission to be unsure. It’s through the process of exploration that you’ll ultimately find clarity.
2.) Regularly Check in With Yourself
Carve out regular time to check in with yourself. This doesn’t have to be a time-consuming process – five to 10 minutes one or twice a week is enough. Ask yourself explorative questions such as:
- How am I feeling about life right now?
- What truly matters to me?
- Where do I see myself in three months, six months, one year?
- What goals do I hope to accomplish?
- Is my current lifestyle/routine serving my highest good? Why or why not?
Write down your thoughts, doodle your dreams, or even voice-record your feelings. These nuggets of reflection can sometimes contain the very answers you’re seeking.
3.) Seek Counsel but Trust Your Gut
When you’re facing uncertainty it’s often helpful to talk it out. Confide in trusted friends, mentors, and family members. Sometimes an outside perspective can offer new insight and help you make more informed decisions. But remember, the life you’re living is your own. So take what resonates and leave what doesn’t. And trust that little voice inside you. It knows a thing or two about your purpose.
4. Do Something New
Stuck in a rut? Sometimes the best way to find out what you want is by doing something you’ve never done. Take a new class, explore a nearby town you aren’t familiar with, or rearrange your furniture. New perspectives can pop up from the most unexpected places.
Movement, no matter how small, can help dissipate the fog and bring some clarity.
5. Set Small, Achievable Goals
Breaking things down into smaller goals is like having breadcrumbs on a big, mysterious path. Instead of staring at this huge, daunting endgame, you just focus on the next little target. And the best part? Each time you hit one of your mini-goals, you feel motivated to continue which creates momentum.
Plus, if things don’t work out as expected (which happens to us all) or you’re not sure you’re on the right track, these small victories can help you stop, think, and maybe change direction.
Feeling uncertain is a natural part of life. As you navigate the unknown, you learn about yourself and the world. This insight helps you make conscious choices about who you want to be and what you want your life to look like. So, the next time uncertainty rolls in (and trust me, it always does), remember you’ve got the tools and strength to navigate through it and find the next step on your journey.
Take good care and be well! Xx,
