Inspired Living: 21 Questions You Need to Ask Yourself to Discover Your Life's Purpose

“The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away.”

When I was a little girl, I used to sit in the back seat of my mom’s car and stare up at the sky. I’d ask myself over and over again, “Who am I? Why am I here?” And struggle to answer my own questions.

Can you relate?

At one point or another, we all question our reason for being here, and what I’ve realized is it’s our job to find those answers and bring them to fruition.

But sometimes the discovery process can be daunting and seemingly impossible because we’re so caught up in trying to be and live according to the rules of society, rather than the rules of our own soul.

If this sounds familiar, and you feel like your drowning in the sea of who you’re “supposed to be” rather than swimming in the sea of who you actually are, then this article is for you.

The purpose of these 21 questions is to help you get to your internal root and align with your true purpose — the one only you can fulfill. But, before we begin here are a few things you need to keep in mind for this to work successfully:

  • Answer each question quickly and honestly as soon as you read it. Don’t overthink or your answers may not come from a place of sincerity.
  • Write down your answers! This will bring clarity to you, and help you piece your “purpose puzzle” together.
  • This works best if you print out the list, and work away from distractions like your computer and phone. However, if this isn’t possible, put your electronics on airplane mode so you can fully focus.

Ready to go? Let’s begin!

1.) What was your favorite thing to do as a child?

2.) If money wasn’t a concern, what would you spend your time doing?

3.) What do you enjoy doing as an adult?

4.) What are you doing when you lose track of time?

5.) If today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?

6.) What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?

7.) What are your natural talents?

8.) Who inspires you? Why?

9.) What do people typically ask for your help with?

10.) If you could teach something, what would it be?

11.) What were some of the biggest challenges and obstacles in your life?

12.) How did you overcome your biggest challenges and obstacles?

13.) What values or beliefs are important to you?

14.) If you could influence people, how would you influence them?

15.) What do you want to contribute to humanity and the world?

16.) What activities bring meaning into your life?

17.) What’s one thing you’ve learned in your life that you’d like to share with others?

18.) What makes you feel good about yourself? Why does it make you feel good?

19.) What’s your vision for your life? I.e. where will you live, what would you be doing, who will you be around, how would you spend your time.

20.) Looking at your life as it is now, what’s the main thing you’d like to change? Why?

21.) How can you use your natural talents, values, and experiences to help other people and positivity contribute to the world?

Now that you’ve asked yourself these questions, and written down your answers, spend some time re-reading and reflecting on your answers.
